Transformational Middleman gift creates new engine to accelerate breakthroughs at Penn Medicine

Penn Medicine is poised to accelerate its pursuit of medical breakthroughs thanks to a transformational gift from Stanley Middleman, the founder and CEO of Freedom Mortgage. The newly established Middleman Fund is designed to act as a catalyst for high-risk, high-reward research, providing scientists at the Perelman School of Medicine with the necessary resources to chase bold, early-stage ideas. By funding projects at their most pivotal moments, the initiative aims to shorten the timeline between initial laboratory discoveries and real-world applications for patients suffering from cancer, infectious diseases, and autoimmune conditions.

Kevin B. Mahoney, CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, noted that modern scientific progress depends heavily on researchers having both the time and the financial support to follow critical questions wherever they may lead. He believes this gift will not only sustain current progress but create entirely new pathways for exploration across various medical disciplines. This approach builds upon a successful history at Penn Medicine, where previous early investments led to global milestones such as mRNA research and CAR T cell therapy.

Jonathan A. Epstein, Dean of the Perelman School of Medicine and Executive Vice President for the Health System, described the fund as an expansion of Penn’s existing blueprint for translating science into bedside treatment. According to Epstein, the ability to identify and back promising theories today ensures that those ideas can evolve into lifesaving treatments for tomorrow’s patients. By scaling up this model of philanthropic investment, the institution hopes to maintain its position at the absolute cutting edge of clinical innovation.

For Mr. Middleman, this contribution represents his first major commitment to Penn Medicine, though he is already a well known figure in regional philanthropy and business. As a leader committed to community growth through Freedom Mortgage and Freedom Cares, he has previously supported institutions like Temple University and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Now serving on Penn Medicine’s Corporate Council as an adviser and advocate, Middleman is leveraging his success in the private sector to fuel a new era of healthcare discovery in Philadelphia and beyond.
