Sanford Health and North Memorial Health have officially finalized their merger, marking the conclusion of a complex process that spanned several months. The newly combined health system aims to create a robust rural-urban network of care throughout Minnesota, blending the localized presence of North Memorial with the broader resources of the South Dakota-based Sanford Health. Leaders from both organizations expressed optimism during Tuesday’s announcement, suggesting that the partnership is necessary to keep pace with a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
The completion of the deal follows a critical intervention by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, whose office established a ten year oversight agreement to protect patient interests. To secure approval, Sanford committed to a six hundred million dollar investment aimed at maintaining core services at facilities in Robbinsdale and Maple Grove. Additionally, fifteen million dollars will be allocated toward supporting small and independent rural healthcare providers across the state to prevent gaps in accessibility.
Beyond financial investments, the agreement includes strict protections for specific types of medical services and employee rights. The oversight deal ensures that reproductive health, mental health, and gender affirming care will remain available at the Robbinsdale hospital. It also guarantees that current union contracts, job security, and benefit packages for North Memorial staff stay intact. Furthermore, Sanford has pledged to maintain its participation in Medicare and Medicaid while continuing existing charity care and financial assistance programs.
This resolution arrives after significant pushback from Twin Cities residents and faith leaders who feared that consolidation could lead to higher costs or reduced access for marginalized populations. While those concerns initially clouded the proposal back in May, officials are now framing the outcome as a victory for workers and patients alike.
