Study finds coffee linked to testosterone, body fat and metabolism, especially in men

Your morning ritual might be doing more for your body than simply shaking off sleep. According to a recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition, regular coffee consumption is linked to leaner body compositions and distinct metabolic advantages. Researchers in Finland tracked over two thousand adults and discovered that those who drank more coffee typically possessed lower percentages of body fat and visceral fat, while maintaining more skeletal muscle mass. Interestingly, these benefits appeared regardless of overall weight, suggesting that coffee drinkers weren’t necessarily thinner, but rather had a healthier ratio of muscle to fat.

The connection becomes more complex when looking at male hormones. The data revealed that men who drank more coffee generally had higher levels of total testosterone. However, this didn’t mean they had more usable energy or strength available to them. The study found that coffee intake was also tied to higher levels of sex hormone binding globulin, a protein that essentially traps testosterone in the blood. This meant that while total levels were up, free testosterone—the active form the body actually uses—was actually lower. Women showed a different hormonal response entirely, highlighting that the effects of caffeine on endocrine systems are highly sex specific.

Beyond muscles and hormones, the researchers noted significant improvements in how the body handles sugar. Men with higher coffee intake exhibited better insulin sensitivity and lower fasting insulin levels, which are key indicators of metabolic health. They also saw lower levels of certain branched chain amino acids often associated with insulin resistance. While these results sound promising for anyone looking to optimize their metabolism, scientists are quick to urge caution regarding the conclusions.

Because this was a cross sectional study, it provides a snapshot in time rather than a roadmap of cause and effect. The researchers cannot definitively say that coffee causes these physiological changes; it is equally possible that people with certain metabolic profiles are simply more drawn to coffee. Furthermore, because the study relied on self reporting without accounting for brew methods or added sugars and creams, it remains unclear if the magic lies in the caffeine itself or other compounds within the bean. For now, your daily brew remains a correlation rather than a proven cure for low testosterone or excess body fat.
