According to records released following a right to know request, six week old Mary Stoltzfus died at home on August 18 from a measles infection. Medical professionals noted that she was particularly susceptible to the illness due to Amish lethal microcephaly, a genetic birth defect resulting in an underdeveloped brain and smaller head size.
In contrast, the case of baby Ivan Miller presented a different clinical picture. An autopsy performed by the coroner’s office determined that Miller died on August 14 from a ruptured spleen shortly after birth. While measles was listed as a contributing factor on the death certificate because it was considered a significant condition at the time, Dr. Diamantoni clarified that the virus did not actually cause the rupture of the organ. Because neither infant had reached the typical age of one for their first vaccination dose, they were unable to be immunized against the disease.
