Health officials in Florida are sounding the alarm as cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection known for causing severe diarrhea, continue to climb across the state. According to the latest data from the state Health Department, there are now 154 confirmed cases along with four additional suspected infections. While the spike is part of a broader national trend, Miami Dade County has emerged as the primary hotspot within Florida, reporting 33 confirmed cases, followed by 13 in Broward County and one in Monroe County.
Investigators believe that nearly two thirds of these infections were contracted locally within Florida, though several other patients fell ill after traveling domestically or abroad. The surge coincides with a significant food safety alert involving Taylor Farms, which recently expanded a voluntary recall of various iceberg lettuce products sourced from central Mexico. The California based company warned that contaminated produce may have been shipped to 27 different states, including Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas.
The scope of the recall covers twenty five different types of shredded lettuce and salad mixes distributed under eight separate brand codes. Although Taylor Farms has not released the specific names of all affected brands or retail locations, they noted that some shipments reached stores as recently as mid July with expiration dates extending into early August. This suggests that contaminated greens could still be present in some household refrigerators or on store shelves.
In response to the outbreak, public health experts are urging residents to take extra precautions when preparing meals. To lower the risk of contracting the parasite, officials recommend washing hands frequently and scrubbing all fresh produce thoroughly before consumption. Those experiencing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers for testing and treatment.
