Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi announced the news on Tuesday, confirming that the country successfully completed the mandatory forty two day monitoring period following the discharge of the final locally transmitted patient on June sixteenth. Throughout this critical window, the Ministry of Health maintained rigorous surveillance across the country, and officials report that no new cases have emerged.
The outbreak in Uganda was relatively contained compared to the devastation seen nearby, with twenty confirmed cases in total. While eighteen patients recovered and were discharged, two individuals lost their lives to the disease. Both fatalities were nationals of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, highlighting how closely linked these regional health crises often are due to cross border movement.
Despite the celebration at home, Ugandan authorities are not letting their guard down. Minister Baryomunsi took to social media to urge citizens to remain vigilant and continue practicing essential public health measures. The caution comes as a massive surge of infections continues to ravage the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, where more than three thousand people have been infected and over fourteen hundred have died since mid May.
Medical experts warn that this current wave is particularly dangerous because it involves the Bundibugyo strain, one of the rarest variants of Ebola and one for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments. The World Health Organization has described this specific outbreak as the fastest spreading ever recorded, suggesting that official numbers may actually underestimate the true scale of the tragedy by several fold. For now, Uganda stands as a success story in containment, but remains on high alert as long as its neighbor suffers.
