Among those affected is nine year old John Detmer from Riverhead, whose experience highlights how easily the disease can spread. Despite never having direct contact with any wildlife, John fell severely ill in late April after his mother removed a tick from his head. The young boy suffered through ten days of high fevers and agonizing pain in his head and neck. Tularemia is primarily transmitted through the bites of deer flies and ticks, though it can also be contracted by handling infected rodents or hares. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness typically peaks between May and September, though it remains uncommon nationwide with only 196 cases reported across the United States in 2023. Medical professionals emphasize that while the disease can become life threatening if left unchecked, most infections respond well to antibiotic treatment when caught early.

To stay safe during peak tick season, health experts recommend using insect repellent and wearing protective gloves when handling animals. They also advise residents to avoid mowing over dead animals to reduce the risk of aerosolizing bacteria that could lead to infection.
