According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the youth died on August 31 following a battle with Naegleria fowleri. While officials had previously reported that the teen had fallen ill, this latest announcement confirms the tragic outcome of the case.
Health experts explain that these organisms occur naturally in warm freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, and ponds. When a person swims or dives into these waters, the amoeba can enter through the nose and travel directly to the brain. The Centers for Disease Control describes this specific type of infection as extremely rare, yet almost always fatal once it takes hold in the central nervous system.
In light of this tragedy, state health officials are urging residents to take precautions when enjoying outdoor water activities, particularly during the late summer months when water temperatures peak. To reduce risk, people are encouraged to keep their heads above water or hold their noses while swimming. Authorities specifically advise against jumping or diving into freshwater during periods characterized by high temperatures and low water levels.
