Forget ‘proteinmaxxing’: less protein could help healthier ageing, new study suggests

For years, the wellness world has been obsessed with proteinmaxxing, fueling a massive market for everything from oversized tubs of whey powder to reinforced cereal bars. The prevailing wisdom suggested that more protein equals more health, particularly as we get older. However, a comprehensive analysis of over 300 studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison suggests that this obsession might be misguided. Researchers now believe that for many people, dialing back protein intake could actually be the secret to a longer, healthier life and a reduced risk of age-related diseases like cancer and diabetes.

According to study author Dudley Lamming, there is no denying that protein is essential for muscle growth and recovery in athletes. The problem arises because much of the general population leads a relatively sedentary lifestyle while following dietary advice meant for gym enthusiasts. When people consume more protein than their activity levels require, it may lead to negative health outcomes. Conversely, a lower-protein diet appears to improve metabolic function by stabilizing blood sugar and reducing fatty tissue, even in cases where overall calorie consumption remains higher.

This biological shift is driven largely by a protective hormone called FGF21, which rises when protein intake drops and helps the body burn energy more efficiently. Perhaps more importantly, restricting protein triggers a cellular cleanup process known as autophagy. During this phase, the body enters a repair mode where it removes cellular trash and damaged proteins, effectively keeping cells more youthful and functional over time. It transforms the body from a state of constant growth into one of maintenance and renewal.

Despite these findings, experts warn against a one size fits all approach to dieting. Protein restriction is not recommended for pregnant women, growing children, or those recovering from serious injuries. There is also ongoing debate regarding the needs of the elderly; while some guidelines suggest they need similar or higher amounts of protein than younger adults to prevent muscle loss, others argue for personalization based on movement levels.

Ultimately, the research highlights a need to move away from generic nutritional mandates toward personalized medicine. Rather than following broad trends, Lamming suggests that protein recommendations should be tailored to an individual’s specific physical activity level and overall health profile. While many modern dieters are likely overdoing it on supplements and steaks, the goal moving forward will be finding the precise balance between maintaining muscle mass and triggering the longevity benefits of restraint.
