One Childhood Diet Habit Was Linked to a 46% Lower Alzheimer’s Risk

What if the key to protecting your brain decades from now lies in what you ate before your second birthday? A new study published in the journal npj Aging suggests that children who consumed less sugar during their first one thousand days after conception had a striking 46 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life compared to those who did not face such restrictions. The findings, drawn from health records of more than 60,000 people enrolled in the UK Biobank, also showed reduced risks of dementia, anxiety, and depression among those who experienced early sugar restriction. Researchers say the results point to nutrition during the earliest stages of life as a potentially powerful factor in long-term brain health.

The study was made possible by an unusual historical accident. During World War II and for several years afterward, sugar was heavily rationed in the United Kingdom, and children younger than two received no sugar ration at all. When rationing ended in September 1953, adult sugar consumption nearly doubled. That created what scientists call a natural experiment, allowing researchers to compare people exposed to lower sugar levels early in life with those who were not. A team based in China examined records of more than 60,000 individuals born between 1951 and 1956, sorting them into groups based on whether sugar rationing covered their time in the womb only, their time in the womb plus early childhood, or neither period. They then tracked how participants’ health changed as they aged using medical records and self-reported conditions from the UK Biobank.

The differences were significant across multiple measures. Beyond the sharp reduction in Alzheimer’s risk, those who experienced sugar restriction during their first thousand days had a 27 percent lower risk of dementia from any cause, a 20 percent lower risk of anxiety, and an 11 percent lower risk of depression compared to the non-rationed group. No association was found with Parkinson’s disease. When researchers examined MRI scans from roughly 9,000 participants, they found that brains of those exposed to sugar rationing appeared slightly younger than expected for their age and showed larger volumes in regions tied to memory and cognitive function, including the hippocampus and thalamus.

Experts caution against reading too much into a single study. Professor Fahad Hanna of Torrens University Australia told Newsweek that while the findings fit with existing knowledge about how early-life conditions shape lifelong health, Alzheimer’s is a complex disease driven by genetics, cardiovascular health, education, lifestyle, and many environmental factors accumulated over decades. He noted that people exposed to lower sugar intake early in life may have differed in other ways that influence dementia risk later on, including socioeconomic circumstances and broader dietary patterns throughout adulthood. The study authors themselves emphasized that the results show association rather than direct causation and called for replication in contemporary groups before any clinical or public health recommendations are made. Still, Hanna said the research reinforces existing guidance to limit excessive added sugar during pregnancy and early childhood and adds to growing evidence that the first thousand days represent one of the most important windows for lifelong health.
